The Village Women's Organization (VIWO) is a private, non-profit, educational, and charitable Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) whose aim is to stimulate a wider interest and more effective participation in women's concerns by women in particular and society in general. It is a charitable organization which is involved in world development programs covering a wide range of activities centered around education, nutrition, food and agriculture sustainable development, environmental issues, health and sanitation.
Presently in Africa (Burkina Faso, Senegal, Tanzania, Cameroon and Kenya),
VIWO is an organization whose aim among others is to improve the socio-economic well-being of the disadvantaged populations of the countries where we operate. Most of these populations are found in rural areas and urban slums.
The organization welcomes volunteers who are prepared to dedicate themselves in any way possible to the support and promotion of activities for well-being of rural women and children. VIWO places special emphasis on filling any gaps that existing development agencies have not addressed.The organization studies very carefully the lifestyles of rural households and seeks means of improving them morally, economically, socially, and culturally through their different programs.
The organization's main focus is on women and children. Consequently projects are centered around women's groups and youth groups. All projects have an educational component This ensures participation at all levels from everyone. The first phase of any project is an educational program designed in collaboration with group leaders to ensure proper implementation. This is considered the most important phase of all projects.
Vision: In VIWO, we try to imagine a world in which people truly care for and respect everyone in the absence of exploitation for self-interest. A world where people of the world truly and honestly believe in the equitable distribution of the world's resources and ensuring that the basic necessities of life are enjoyed by all. The above mission is meant to bring about the economic empowerment of women, self-sustainable families, youth empowerment engagement. We believe that given the opportunity, every child can succeed in one way or the other and as such as a right to be provided with the right circumstances and the lifestyle that guarantees that success.
Projects may be developed from any of the following areas, depending on the priorities of the given situation:
Programs for victims of domestic violence, violence against women and gender equality, poverty alleviation especially among children, food security and nutrition, water sanitation and hygiene, children and youth empowerment, agriculture and environmental protection, peace and conflict resolution, Human Rights, counseling to families and youth, formal and informal education, on-the-job training, creating income generating activities for families, aid to refugees and immigrants in danger, internally displaced persons as a result of armed conflict, Community Health Care, Humanitarian Relief, Democracy and good governance, Media and Development.
Summary: Most work programs will generally be focused on disadvantaged communities and the poor. VIWO will work with Global organizations to promote the United Nations development goals through the following documents: Nairobi forward looking strategies, Action on the Beijing platform for action, Millennium Development goals, Sustainable development goals. VIWO works with and supports organizations which work to build supportive networks on a global scale and special emphasis on disadvantaged communities. VIWO works as an international advocacy unit for women, children, and youth especially in the domain of human rights, HIV/AIDS, internally and externally displaced persons (especially refugees).
